A Conversation with Brandon Thome
In the serene foothills of Alberta, amidst the sweeping landscapes that define the Canadian west, lies a golf tournament unlike any other. On September 10, 2024, the Canadian Cowboy Classic Golf Tournament will blend sport with philanthropy, bringing together golf enthusiasts and community advocates for a cause that resonates deeply with the Canadian spirit.
This year, as we gear up for another memorable event, we had the privilege of sitting down with Brandon Thome, the Executive Director of CPRSMT and the driving force behind this prestigious tournament, to catch a glimpse into what makes the Canadian Cowboy Classic so special.
JF: Let’s start with the basics: What inspired the inception of the Canadian Cowboy Classic Golf Tournament?
BT: The tournament was born out of a desire to support the Canadian Pro Rodeo Sport Medicine Team, which provides essential medical care to rodeo athletes across Canada. We saw an opportunity to blend our love for golf with our mission to ensure these athletes receive top-notch medical attention.
JF: How does the Canadian Cowboy Classic Golf Tournament contribute to supporting CPRSMT’s efforts?
BT: The tournament is our primary fundraising event. Through sponsorships, player registrations, and donations, we raise crucial funds that directly support the CPRSMT’s operations. Operating at a yearly cost nearing $500,000, our team delivers crucial care, supplies, and services to over 250 rodeo & bull riding events annually. This fundraiser is our lifeline and is essential in offsetting the financial burdens we face.
JF: What makes this tournament different than others out there?
BT: Our tournament is unlike any other you will see! From the coveted Troy Fischer buckles that the winners take home, to experiencing actual rodeo events along the course, not to mention our on-course competitions like Beat the Cowboy and Beat the Clown- we guarantee an entertaining day. We start the morning off with a hearty Cowboy Breakfast and finish off with a delicious meal & awards presentations in the club house giving everyone an opportunity to catch up with old friends or make new connections.
JF: How can readers get involved?
BT: I would encourage everyone to join us for a day of golf, fun, and philanthropy. Whether you’re an avid golfer, a rodeo enthusiast, or simply someone who cares about supporting athletes’ health, your participation makes a meaningful impact. We have plenty of sponsorship opportunities available and are happily taking auction items for the event’s silent auction.
From the stunning backdrop of the Valley Ridge Golf Club to the camaraderie that comes from supporting a noble cause, the Canadian Cowboy Classic is more than just a sporting event – it’s a celebration of community and compassion. We look forward to seeing you on September 10!
