Rodeo Athletes: Spring Into Peak Performance with Specialized Training Camps

As rodeo athletes, you know the gruelling demands of your sport: split-second decisions, powerful bursts of strength, and unrelenting endurance. Yet, how often do you focus on preparing your body for the physical challenges of competition? Coming up in 2025, the Canadian Pro Rodeo Sport Medicine Team (CPRSMT) invites you to take your performance to the next level with one of our Rodeo Spring Training Camps, a unique opportunity to invest in your longevity and success.

We sat down with Chris Sharkey, Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for the CPRSMT, to discuss why these camps are game changers for athletes across all rodeo disciplines.

About the Camps

What inspired the creation of the Rodeo Spring Training Camps? Sharkey explains, “The first spring camp that I coached at was in January 2022 and I have only missed one since. The camps were the brainchild of Kynan Vine, who wanted to help rodeo athletes get back into shape after the COVID-19 pandemic when many had been inactive for up to 18 months. We saw it as an opportunity to address a crucial gap and provide athletes with tools to prepare for the physical demands of their sport.” Since their inception in May 2021, these camps have evolved into a cornerstone for athlete preparation, emphasizing education and holistic development for competitors of all levels.

Open to all rodeo athletes, from amateurs to professionals, these camps are designed to provide valuable lessons for every skill level. Whether you’re a brand-new competitor, a returning athlete, or a seasoned veteran, there’s something to gain.

What Can Athletes Expect at These Camps?

A typical day at camp includes activities designed to enhance athletic performance. Athletes learn proper dynamic warm-ups to replicate before events, participate in training sessions focused on injury prevention, and engage in strength-building exercises.

The camps also feature guest speakers, including nutritionists, mental performance experts, and business development leaders from the rodeo community. Comprehensive physical testing and movement analysis are conducted throughout the weekend, providing personalized data that athletes can use to refine their training.

“Each camp provides a hands-on, interactive experience,” says Sharkey. “We include sport-specific strength training, mobility drills, recovery techniques, and even mental conditioning exercises to build resilience. The program builds on each day’s sessions, ensuring athletes leave with actionable knowledge.”

How Does Training Enhance Rodeo Performance?

“Rodeo is a fast-paced, dangerous, and unpredictable sport,” Sharkey explains. Success demands mobility, stability, and strength. “Well-conditioned athletes are mobile, stable, strong and can effectively produce and reduce force, which minimizes the risk of injury. Our training focuses on building these foundational qualities,” he says.

By using performance testing data collected at each camp, CPRSMT tailors programs to complement the unique demands of competition, ensuring athletes are better prepared for the challenges ahead.

Benefits for Participants

Athletes leave camp with physical testing numbers, two sample workouts for in-home and in-gym use, and actionable tools to integrate into their routines. “Participants frequently tell us they feel stronger, more confident, and better equipped to handle competition,” Sharkey notes.

Beyond physical benefits, the camps foster community. “Athletes can network, share experiences, and build camaraderie with like-minded individuals,” he adds. Several past participants have gone on to have successful seasons after attending camp. While results vary, these camps provide an excellent foundation upon which to build for future achievements.

Logistics and Accessibility

Preparing for camp is simple. “Come with an open mind, gym shoes, shorts, and deodorant,” says Sharkey. “Be ready to absorb new concepts and ask questions.”
