Welcome to Sport Med Corner, where we plan to shed light on all your burning questions, bring you relevant sport med information to help increase your knowledge and improve your performance.
But let us first introduce ourselves. We are a group of dedicated caregivers who are passionate about Rodeo and the western way of life. We are celebrating our 40th year of service and have grown from 4 volunteers in 1983 to a team of over 60 caregivers today. The CPRSMT is led by a volunteer Board of Directors with decades of service to the sport of rodeo.
The caregivers you will see down the rodeo trail are certified athletic therapists, registered massage therapists and chiropractors. We have curated a network of physicians, sport medicine physicians, dieticians, strength and conditioning specialists, mental health professionals, dentists and orthopedic surgeons as needed who truly understand the sport and can provide the best care for our athletes.
It takes a team surrounding the rodeo athlete for them to be successful. Cowboys and cowgirls can sustain significant injuries throughout their career and the practitioners of the Canadian Pro Rodeo Sport Medicine Team (CPRSMT) are the people in place to handle the emergencies as they happen, coordinate follow care as needed, guide the rehabilitation, and return to competition process for each athlete.
We strive to help athletes in their rodeo careers by providing pre-event care and treatment, acute injury arena coverage, crisis control, and post-event care and follow up. The Team educates and enables competitors to better care for themselves and their injuries, to ensure they get the most out of their lives and rodeo careers. By providing this care, we have seen a reduction in the number of ‘turn-outs’ by increasing healthy competitors.
We are a not-for-profit organization that relies heavily on our volunteers and their passion for the western way of life. Our caregivers are paid a small stipend for the rodeos/events they attend, and all travel costs are covered. Additional team expenses include medical supplies and equipment, our trucks and mobile treatment trailers, and team administrative costs. The team is not a financially self-sustaining organization and relies on contributions from the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, its members, rodeo committees, private donors, fundraisers, and corporate partners.
We are so grateful for organizations such as the Ladies of Pro Rodeo for their continued support through their annual fashion show held during CFR each year. With the help of a variety of sponsors, we host Canadian Cowboy Classic Golf Tournament in Calgary each fall- a fundraising event truly like no other! We are continuing to build long term partnerships with businesses for our game-changing Rodeo Spring Training Camps, and to provide support to the future stars of rodeo at High School rodeo events.
Our sincere gratitude goes out to the community partnerships we have formed over the years, as it is only with the generous support of these organizations that we can help athletes of all levels compete at the top of their game.
